Every day is precious..... I don't take any of them for granted.
My high school years were not the happiest years of my life. I moved from a small town in northern Washington to Rosemead, CA for my freshman year. It was a total culture shock for me. The next year my family moved to LA and I went to Belmont High School for 1 semester. That was even a bigger shock and living downtown Los Angeles gave me some experiences I have never forgotten. I was fortunate to finish my high school years at Torrance but by the time I recovered from my earlier experiences high school was over.
What did you do right after high school?
Attended El Camino College for one semester until Uncle Sam came calling.....
What did you want to do or think you were going to do when you finished high school?
I had no clue.....
What would we be surprised to know about you?
After teaching high school for four years I quit teaching and started building custom homes. I owned my own construction company for 17 years before retiring and returning to the classroom.
What’s your favorite memory of THS?
Mr. Hulse..... He made me want to be a math teacher....
Biggest thing you would do differently if you went back to your time at THS?
I wish I could haved attended Torrance high school for all 4 years.... I also wish it hadn't been such a difficult time financially for my family.
Any words of wisdom?
Don't judge kids by how they act in high school..... they all grow up eventually and many surprise you.... That knowledge frames the way I look at my high school students now...
Don't ever let today's realities stop you from seeing tomorrow's possibilities...
